Giant Food, the leading Washington D.C. regional grocery chain, collected $550,520 to help address food insecurity among children within its local communities. From June 16 through Aug, 7, Giant held its new customer giving campaign, “Nourishing Our Youth.” Giant customers were given the option to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs.
All of the proceeds raised were donated to local school districts so they may use the funds to best serve their community and support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building on-campus food pantries.
“We all know that children need nutritious meals to grow, learn and thrive. But too many children across our region struggle to receive a decent meal at lunch when attending school,” said Felis Andrade, director of external communications & community relations. “Through Giant’s Nourishing Our Youth program, we can give much-needed funds to school districts within our region to support their meal programs. We are incredibly grateful to our outstanding customers for their philanthropic support and thrilled to be able to donate these funds to our local school districts.”
According to Feeding America, over nine million children, or 1 in 8, faced hunger in 2022. Research has also consistently demonstrated that good nutrition and the ability to learn are intrinsically connected. School food programs are critical to ensuring many children receive regular meals and Giant is committed to continuing to support food insecurity efforts for children throughout its region.
“The generous Nourishing Our Youth Program allowed the Falls Church Education Foundation to provide Giant gift cards for food and school supplies for hundreds of students in need in the Falls Church City Public Schools,” said Debbie Hiscott, executive director. “This critical support provided meals to ensure our families could send their children to school well fed and ready to learn. Public education prepares all students to enter the workforce, and we are grateful for the support of the Nourish Our Youth donors.”
Funds are currently being distributed to schools throughout October. For more information about the program, email NourishingOurYouth@cranecommunications.com.
Giant Food annually donates over 4.5 million pounds of food and over $1 million in cash contributions to its five Feeding America food bank partners in an effort to eliminate hunger within its region. Giant offers an extensive account of its efforts throughout 2022 across areas of charitable giving, education, partnerships, innovation and development to be a Better Neighbor, which means being a Better Place to Shop and Better Place to Work within the greater DMV region, in its Better Neighbor Report. Southeastern Grocers Inc., parent company and home of Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, is celebrating its beloved Winn-Dixie associate and American Congressional Gold Medal recipient, Romay Davis, on her 104th birthday. The neighborhood grocer hosted a special in-store birthday celebration at Davis’s home Winn-Dixie store in Montgomery alongside her friends, family and local community.
In the spirit of spreading love and warm wishes, SEG is inviting those near and far to share in Davis’s milestone celebration by sending her a handmade or signed birthday card. Cards can be mailed to Southeastern Grocers at the following address:
Romay Davis c/o Southeastern Grocers
8928 Prominence Parkway, Building 200
Jacksonville, FL 32256
Raymond Rhee, chief people officer, said, “We are deeply rooted in the communities we serve, and part of our story includes incredible associates like Ms. Romay. As we celebrate her 104th birthday, we hope to express our deepest gratitude for being a part of her extraordinary story. During her military service, Ms. Romay sorted mail to bolster crucial morale for troops. This year, we are proud to return the favor by sorting her birthday mail from those near and far.”
Davis’s birthday festivities included a grand entrance featuring a performance from Parker Crossing High School’s band, remarks from SEG leadership, meet-and-greet with Alabama nonprofit community partners, a cake cutting ceremony and more.
Born on Oct. 29, 1919 in Virginia, Davis enlisted in the Army in 1943 as a Private First-Class member of the U.S. Army 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed “Six Triple Eight.” During a time when women and people of color faced discrimination, her battalion was a predominantly Black, all-female unit deployed overseas and cleared backlog in a mere three months by sorting an average of 195,000 pieces of mail per day.
After her discharge from military service, Davis enjoyed many accomplishments including becoming a NYU multi-degree scholar, working in real estate and fashion, earning her taekwondo black belt, and more before rejoining the workforce as a Winn-Dixie associate in 2001.
A true pioneer of her time, Davis is also the namesake of SEG’s Romay Davis Belonging, Inclusion and Diversity Grant. The grocer, together with its charitable arm, the SEG Gives Foundation, recently accepted applications from nonprofits throughout the Southeast for its fourth annual grant program, which supports organizations that work to address racial disparities in education, health care and food insecurity. Recipient nonprofit organizations for 2023 were announced following Davis’s 104th birthday on Oct. 29.
Additionally, Davis was recently awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award at the 10th annual Women Who Shape the State event in March. In 2022, she was honored by The National WWII Museum in New Orleans at its American Spirit Awards with a Silver Service Medallion, a recognition reserved for those who have served our country with distinction.

FreshDirect, the online grocery shopping pioneer, has announced its inaugural class of local emerging food brands selected to participate in the company’s newly launched Rising Industry Producers and Entrepreneurs Program. This year, Doughnuttery, Mai Vino, Matriark Foods, Pure Mitti, Spoonful, and TerraNut have been selected to participate in this innovative initiative.
In keeping with its long-standing commitment to partner with local vendors across the farming, fishing, and food production sectors, FreshDirect has launched the one-year pilot program for brands with retail ambitions, that are looking to take their businesses to the next level. The New York area online grocer will partner and collaborate with emerging and diverse-owned businesses to provide expert industry counsel and leverage internal FreshDirect resources to grow their brands.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to adapt their strategies for ecommerce success, connect with a FreshDirect category manager for one-on-one mentorship and expand their customer base within the New York City and tri-state area. Additionally, the companies will also have the chance to cultivate lasting relationships with FreshDirect, distribution partners, community partners and fellow emerging entrepreneurs.
“Since its inception, FreshDirect has worked directly with growers, producers and local food innovators to deliver the highest quality, freshest food – from best in-season produce, meat and seafood, to chef-prepared meals and shortcuts and special local finds,” said Dave Bass, managing director, FreshDirect. “We have a deep tradition of supporting our local food vendors and this new initiative enables us to discover new partners who are elevating and evolving the food and culinary landscape with their products and brands.”
Following is more information on the six participating brands:
Matriark is led by founder, Anna Hammond and Joyce Huang who, before starting Matriark, built a healthy eating program for youth and families living in public housing in New York City. That work inspired them to create greater access to healthy food for all people while simultaneously creating new markets for farmers and positive environmental impact.
Founder Suniti Ramanujam is a former National Geographic ad executive; she saw firsthand the devastating effects of toxins and plastics on our planet. Seeking inspiration from her centenarian great-grandmother’s Ayurvedic lifestyle, she immersed herself in the world of sustainable living with rural farmers in India. This powerful experience inspired the birth of Pure Mitti, and Suniti honors her grandmother’s healthy life through the brand’s mission and by sharing the essence of ancient science, culture, tradition, and methods in accessible formats for the modern consumer.
Founded by Bradley Gifford, Spoonful’s story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and a relentless commitment to holistic health. Driven by the transformative power of personal experience, Bradley embarked on a profound health and wellness journey that reshaped his life’s trajectory. Through his health challenges, he realized nutrition’s pivotal role in achieving optimal well-being. This awakening marked the birth of Spoonful – a manifestation of Bradley’s vision to make nutritious, convenient, and flavorful foods accessible to all.
Urszula has her roots in rural Poland, having been born and raised there on her family’s farm. It was in this environment that she learned the values of hard work, teamwork, and responsibility. Her father, a passionate farmer, instilled in her a deep love for family and the land. Throughout her journey, Urszula drew inspiration from her father’s unwavering commitment to his family and his land. These values became the foundation of her entrepreneurial spirit.
“Many customers value local products and knowing the origin stories behind where and how their food is made. We take great pride in introducing such innovative products, enabling shoppers to support up-and-coming brands they have a community connection to,” said Loan Heilner, senior associate category manager at FreshDirect. “FreshDirect’s expert merchandising team leverages its industry knowledge to guide these entrepreneurs and also provides access to resources to help vendors elevate their brands and achieve retail success.”
The call for applicants to the inaugural program began in Spring of 2023 and each participant presented their business in front of a panel of executives from FreshDirect’s merchandising and marketing teams at the FreshDirect headquarters in the Bronx. There were over 90 applicants, and six brands were selected.
Additionally, during the brand onboarding process, each selected brand participated in two virtual learning sessions hosted by FreshDirect experts: the New Item Setup Process session and the Marketing, PR & Brand session. These sessions focused on key topics to help the brands get ready to launch on the FreshDirect platform.
